Probiotics

What are they? Probiotics means ‘for life’. A Probiotic is a culture of bacteria and yeasts. It is a living entity containing active live anaerobic and aerobic microbes, the most common being photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeasts.

What do they do? These organisms are the same as the ones that are supposed to reside in the caecum (large intestine). They assist in the digestion of fibre, and yield additional protein and vitamins when they die. There is a delicate ecosystem in the intestines of animals (humans included). This ecosystem can be disrupted by antibiotics, poor nutrition, medications and drugs, physical and psychological stress, and pain and injury stress. Transportation, diet changes, weather changes, teeth filing have also been linked to changes in the digestive ecosystem.

Cats and dogs whose diets consist mainly of dry food can be getting too much carbohydrates, which converts to sugar and gives the perfect environment for the wrong bacteria to thrive in the intestines. For horses, diets high in raw grains lead to an overload of the small intestine and undigested food ends up in the caecum. When grain ferments in the caecum, it yields lactic acid, ammonia, gas and heat which upsets the normal balance of the beneficial micro-organisms. These micro-organisms cannot tolerate acid conditions and they die allowing acid tolerant harmful organisms to overtake. This causes digestive upsets such as colic, diarrhoea and laminitis in horses and stomach upsets, dull coat and lethargy in dogs and cats.

Even small upsets in the balance of the ecosystem can lead to more subtle conditions such as loss of condition and body weight, loss of energy and enthusiasm, irritability, dull lifeless coats, loose or very fibrous manure.

Simple probiotics like yoghurt and yeast cultures have been used in the horse industry for some time now. But advances in research and the availability of Effective Micro-Organisms Mother Culture have lead to an increase in use of specialised Probiotics. Probiotics is now a cost effective way of treating your animals especially after a course of antibiotics.

How do I use Probiotics?
Probiotics are now available in either liquid or powder form. Cedar Party Minerals have available a complete mineral mix, EnduroMin Pro with Probiotics already in it which is for horses. This has the added advantage of ensuring the minerals you give your horses are digested and assimilated as well as improving gut flora.

We have a similar mix of minerals with Probiotics already added for Dogs and Cats and it is called ProArk Dog and Cat minerals.

We also have available a liquid Probiotic called ProArk Liquid. This Probiotic is cultured on our special mineral and trace element mix and is suitable for all animals. A syringe is supplied and you simply measure out the required amount and put it in your animals feed. This liquid probiotics is especially good to use after your pet has had antibiotics. It is available in 125ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1Litre. We have it available in the smaller bottles for price and convenience.

Directions for Use: A syringe is supplied for ease of measurement. Dosage rates are approx. 1ml per 5kg bodyweight with a maximum of 10mls daily.
Do not use at the same time as antibiotics, but can be started immediately after finishing the course.
